Located next to a covered bridge in scenic Grafton
Village, Vermont, Grafton Village Cheese Company is "dedicated to preserving the
cheddar making tradition started here in 1892."
A "must-see" tourist destination, Grafton Village appears virtually untouched by the 20th century, featuring a blacksmith's shop, a steepled white church, a carriage house, a tavern built in 1801, and of course, the Grafton Village Cheese Company. When a fire destroyed the original factory, it was rebuilt with the help of the Windham Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving the character of this part of rural Vermont.
Smaller family farms throughout southern Vermont supply the all-Jersey milk that goes into making these award winning cheeses. Eight types of raw milk, handcrafted Cheddar are featured, including: Stone House Cheddar (aged six years), Five Star Cheddar (aged 5 years), Four Star Cheddar (aged four years), Classic Reserve Extra Sharp (aged two years), Premium Cheddar (aged one year), Smoked, Sage and Garlic. These Cheeses are packed in a wide variety of sizes, from 4-ounce bars to 40-pound blocks.
Grafton Village Cheese Company is owned by the Windham Foundation, a non-profit company whose mission is to preserve the traditional Vermont way of life. As an operation foundation, it uses most of the annual earned income from its four subsidiaries, which also includes the Old Tavern at Grafton, Grafton Village Nursery and Retreat Farm, to fund a variety of charitable programs throughout Vermont. The Grafton Village Cheese Company has an on-premises retail outlet and a very successful mail order and wholesale business. Their products may also be found in many retail deli cheese displays and specialty shops.
